Portela Sept 10

This morning we had some woodland trail through the eucalyptis

These are the waymarks for following the camino. The yellow arrows are our direction towards Santiago. The red and white are also for the way to Santiago. The blue arrows are for the pilgrimage to Fatima. Fatima is between Porto and Lisbon, so at this point, the Fatima pilgrimage is the reverse of our pilgrimage, the Camino Portugues.

Mid afternoon, only a few km to go.

It is now mid day and we have walked about 10 miles into the city of Barcleos. Since I could not find any internet yesterday, I stopped at the Turismo office to see if there were any internet cafes in town, and they directed me to a free computer for visitors in the back room--nice! My feet and shoulders are sore, but I feel good otherwise. After lunch a mile or so back, Marge and I decided to split up for the rest of the day and meet up again tonight in the albergue at Portela. It is another 5 miles from where I am right now. I hope that works our okay. She is pretty tired and moving slowly, but should be on ahead by now with my computer stop.

The weather is great, about 80 degrees, almost too hot for walking. We are definitely sweating. The old parts of the towns are beautiful, the countryside is beautiful. I am taking lots of photos and hopefully can upload to the blog at some point. In the meantime, if you do a Google search on Camino Portugues, you will find some sites that have photos óf our route.

5 pm.: I caught up again with Marge on the other side of Barcellos, five miles from the end. We ended up being the last ones in the albergue. Marge was really very tired and hot. So I stayed with her the rest of the way. The last km one of the Germans came to see if another person who had not shown up was coming. Anyway, he ended up carried Marges pack the rest of the way and I helped her up the steps. She was really tired. Anyway, after a nap, shower, and more rest, she is revived and okay. Now she says that it was the smell of my sardines at lunch that put her over. Hmmm.
Anyway there is no mercado, but there is a restaurant across the street, so we will eat out tonight.

  3. Hi Dad,

Glad to hear you are on the road! We sailed on the Charles river this afternoon and leave for Acadia National Park tomorrow morning. We won't be walking in Acadia as much as you are, but maybe we will get to kayak.

    Love,

    Julia
